30 January 26
Alexander Marine New Zealand recently completed the successful relocation from New Zealand to Australia of the Outer Reef 630 ‘Amokura’ across the Tasman Sea, following her sale late last year.
Our delivery team, led by Captain Mike, was tasked with relocating the impeccably maintained yacht from Auckland, New Zealand to The Boat Works Boatyard & Shipyard at Coomera, Queensland Australia for her new owner. With the owner requiring delivery in early January 2026, careful planning began well in advance to identify a suitable weather window for the Tasman crossing, and conditions ultimately aligned perfectly.
After departing Brisbane by air on New Year’s Day, the crew arrived in Auckland later that evening. Following an initial inspection of the vessel and final preparations, they set out early on 2nd January for the 130-nautical-mile passage to Opua in the Bay of Islands. Travelling in light offshore winds, the team arrived at Russell in the evening before relocating to Opua Marina to prepare for the offshore leg of the journey.
The following morning was spent finalising provisions, fuelling, and clearing New Zealand customs before departing Opua on 3rd January 2026. The plan was to reach Cape Reinga ahead of first light on Sunday, allowing the crew to take advantage of improving sea conditions as the wind and swell subsided.
As it turned out, the crossing proved remarkably favourable. After a short period of moderate swell, the sea state settled, and the remainder of the passage to Australia was largely smooth, with very little vessel traffic encountered along the way and barely a white cap.
During the journey the crew enjoyed several memorable moments, including sightings of whales and large schools of tuna near the Wanganella Banks. A brief stop at Middleton Reef provided an opportunity to anchor in crystal-clear water, conduct routine checks, and even enjoy a quick swim before continuing the voyage.
From there, ‘Amokura’ completed the final 350-nautical-mile leg to Southport, arriving in the early hours of 9th January where the crew cleared Australian customs. The yacht was then relocated to Coomera for post-delivery detailing and handover to her new owner, who plans to cruise Australia’s east coast.
This delivery continues a line of successful trans-Tasman passages completed by Alexander Marine Australia & New Zealand. Backed by the established resources of Alexander Marine Australia, our experienced team carefully manages every stage of the delivery process for our valued customers – including vessel registration, voyage preparation and customs coordination at both ends of the voyage for a streamlined outcome for both buyers and sellers.
